How much does newborn photography cost?
There are many factors that photographers rely on to calculate pricing for newborn sessions. Here are some examples.

Hours of Photographer’s Time (Session & Editing)
Cost of Studio Space or Travel
Cost of Printed Products

Local Business Fees | Financial Fees | Income Taxes
Location. Yes, where you and your photographer live matters! The cost is simply higher where the cost of living is higher. The good news is there are likely more photographers to choose from in these areas, and hopefully you’ll be able to find one that fits your budget.
Experience. You are trusting someone (you likely just met!) with your most precious gift. A more experienced photographer is going to give you a higher level of confidence in their safety skills around baby. Baby’s safety should always be the #1 priority during session time.
Skill Sets. Your baby is one-of-a-kind! Listening to clients is key, and working to give them the vision of what they had hoped for in the newborn portraits should be at the top of the list. You want a photographer that is patient and knows how to calmly work with baby. A good photographer can highlight your baby in the best way. A creative photographer can work family heirlooms into a pose effortlessly. A talented photographer will be able to recommend colors and props that will give you the most beautiful photos.
Hours. You are paying for the photographer’s time. Time prepping for your session, time working with your baby, and the hours and hours of editing your photos. Most newborns have the typical skin issues that are a big part of editing your photos (and not over-editing!) There’s a fine line in editing, and a really good photographer puts in hours on each and every portrait before you get the final product.
Costs. Costs for photographers can add up quickly! Before they press that shutter button for the 1st time for your baby, they’ve needed to spend quite a bit. Yes, it’s a part of doing business, and these costs are added into pricing.
Before hiring a newborn photographer, get all of your pricing questions answered. You don’t want any surprises! Some photographers list their pricing up front, some only list their session fees. Good questions to ask are:
Does the listed price include everything? What is extra?
Do I need to buy prints/digitals separately? How much are they?
Are there travel fees?
Do you provide wraps, headbands, baskets, etc?
Can we add in personal items into photos?
Can we get a family photo with siblings, baby & parents? Does that cost extra?
Can we get a photo with our dog? Is that extra?
Can we purchase extra baby portraits?
I hope this gives you some understanding about the basics of the pricing of newborn photography. It really is a precious time in life, and finding a talented photographer that works with your budget and vision matters. Best wishes to you and your little one!
