5 tips on how to prepare siblings for their photos with baby

Sibling brother portrait with newborn baby

That beautiful photo of your child holding their new brother or sister is what you’re dreaming of! Here are a few tips to help make that happen.

  • Practice each day. Make it a positive experience! Let them try holding baby while sitting in a comfy, safe place. Help them a little, then try to let them do it alone. See how long they can do it solo.

  • Plan on having baby in a wrap. It will help both of them.

  • Rewards! Yes resorting to bribery might work! Please no chocolate or candy that turns their teeth blue…

  • Relax, if you are getting frustrated, they’ll pick up on that energy. Perhaps just have 1 parent “coach” them so they don’t feel so pressured to perform.

  • Accept their limits. It may only work for them to be near baby, not holding them, if they are under 3.

Finally, remember this is a good chance at a nice photo, not the only chance. If big brother or big sister won’t cooperate, it’s really ok. You’ll have years and years of photos of them together.
